Dublin bus fare rise

The Dublin Community Blog reports that Dublin bus fares have risen again, and comments:

If anyone wants to see how public transport should be done they should travel to Sydney or Melbourne. Quick, easy, and reliable when compared to Dublin. How come they managed to take a penal colony and in 200 years turn it into a state of the art world capital while we managed to take the second city in the British Empire and turn it into a small outback town?
Update: Luas fares go up next week.

A commenter adds that Germany also has a fantastic system, to which I can attest. In fact most European countries have a better system, to my knowledge.

I have asserted in The Road to Nowhere, below, that public transport should be free, but while I’m arguing that one, Labour has come up with a sensible flat-fare policy, which at least has the merit of passengers knowing exactly what they have to pay, and without penalizing passengers who live on the outskirts.
